Getting Around Naples With The First Metro Rail System in Italy



Naples is best defined by the stratification of the various periods in the city’s history that can be viewed in the historic center, the oldest continuously inhabited urban community in the Western World. It corresponds to the ancient city founded by the Athenians around 450 B.C. as Neapolis, through Roman and Medieval times. It includes over 250 churches, palazzi from the 13th through the 20th century and countless art treasures.
Your Exploration starts from the Forum, then under the Gothic Church of San Lorenzo Maggiore to view the ruins of the Roman streets and the Macellum. Then on to San Gregorio Armeno, where the world famous Neapolitan Crib art are made, and Cappella Sansevero’s sculpture of the Veiled Christ. Also, an underground city with ancient aqueducts, caves, catacombs, myths, legends and a modern subway system whose stations are covered with art.

North of Naples the bays of Miseno, Baia and Pozzuoli were the home port of the Roman Navy, Baia’s Imperial Palace featured baths with waters of volcanic origin and the Phlegraean Fields Archeological Musem includes finds from Baia’s submerged city. In Pozzuoli, the Temple of Serapide, is famous for the cyclical sinking of its grounds and the Flavian Amphitheater was the third largest arena of the empire.

The Ferrovia Cumana was the first metro rail transport system in Italy. Established in 1883, it was designed to connect the center of Naples with its northern suburbs and beach resorts, including Pozzuoli, Cuma and Torregaveta, covering 20 Km. The commuter rail service became all electric in 1927 and is now part of the overall metropolitan Naples subway and commuter rail network as part of Lines 6 and 8.


Ferrovia Circumflegrea opened in 1962 to cover 27 Km from Montesanto to Licola with a further extension under construction to Mondragone, the Naples North National Rail Station and the new Grazzanise airport. Cumana and Circumflegrea form a rail ring that covers 40 percent of metropolitan Naples and 60 percent of the local municipalities.


The Montesanto Station was refurbished in recent years to serve the Cumana, Circumflegrea, Metro Line 2 and the Montesanto Funicolare. The new steel and glass exterior retains its original liberty style architecture. The entire metro area can be reached via this station utilizing the Napolipass, GiraNapoli  and Unico Campania fare systems.

Land Water and Countryside Landscapes in the Po River Valley


The Countryside around the Po River is now a huge expanse of fields, but once was a vast brughiera of swamps and forests. The village of Trino, at the crossroad between the old Roman military camps and the medieval towns of Milan, Turin, Vercelli and Asti, was a sacred forest called Lucedio (Lucus Dei), where the Cistercian monks settled in 1123 and built an abbey.
Near the Settlement, there is still a forest - Bosco delle Sorti della Partecipanza di Trino - managed with sustainable socio-criteria since 1202 and from 1991 a public park under FSC protection. Elsewhere in the Po Valley, the monks slowly reclaimed and brought the land under cultivation creating a new eco-environmental system, the Pianura Padana. 
In the Monferrato area by the Po river, the Pianura is an expanse of rice fields divided by canals and flooded in spring time, the so-called Terre d'Acqua, a water-land populated by many migrant animals - herons, storks, swallows. In between the fields there are many old and unique farmhouses, the so-called grange, built by the monks at a distance of half a day’s walk from each other. The reflections of sun rays and moon lights on the still water that covers the flat fields design a very particular landscape, which has been also captured by many artists. 

The Parco Fluviale del Po e dell’Orba is a park with conservation and environmental protection of the cultivated lands is assigned to the EcoMuseo delle Terre d’Acqua located in the Antica Riseria San Giovanni, founded in the 15th Century, which preserves the original plant and a 17th Century watermill. It also houses the Museo delle Macchine da Riso.
Palazzo Mossi (Mossi Palace) in Frassineto Po is where the Centro di Interpretazione del Paesaggio del Po shows environmental changes, the many historical, natural and geological events which over time have changed the landscape and the current configuration of the area.

Innovative Water Conservation and Energy Efficiency Strategies on Main Street

Integrated Water Systems in Small Towns and Rural Communities by 2030 the world will need to produce 50 percent more for food and energy and 30 percent more fresh water. Solar pumps are reliable technology which can compete with conventional pumping technologies such as diesel pumping. Large amounts of energy are used in the entire water cycle. Water Pumps play a major role in all water and waste water processes.
Small and Medium-sized Commercial Buildings account for 95 percent of building stock and consume half the energy in a sector of the economy responsible for 20 percent of the total energy consumption. Owners of smaller buildings are often unaware of the amount of energy wasted and the opportunity for savings that building automation systems provide. This sector hasn’t BAS for the following reasons: the high cost of tailoring software and acquiring hardware components is beyond the reach of most small- and medium-sized properties; the owner is not always the tenant that pays the utility bill, hence limited incentive to invest in the building’s energy efficiency.
Building Leases spell out how energy costs are divided between tenants and owners. Often, these leases are not structured in a way that promotes energy savings. Tenants have no incentive to save energy in their leased premises because energy costs are based on tenant square footage. Building owners have no incentive to invest in energy efficiency because the operating expenses are passed onto tenants. Green Leases promote energy efficiency by creating lease structures which equitably align the costs and benefits of efficiency investments between building owners and tenants.
Energy Management Systems can be used to centrally control devices like HVAC units and lighting systems across multiple locations. EMS also provide metering, sub-metering and monitoring functions that allow facility managers to gather data and insight to make more informed decisions about energy activities across their sites.


LEED Neighborhood Development building technologies and advanced real-time energy smart meters allow business and residential energy users to verify consumption in workplaces and homes. Passive Solar Buildings take advantage of the local climate with window placement and glazing, thermal mass, insulation and shading. Walls, floors and windows are designed and located to collect, store and distribute energy without the use of mechanical and electric devices. Conservation and efficiency are energy reduction techniques; conservation implies sufficiency and is the key to sustainability as it lowers energy costs by reducing resource depletion.
Digital Metering and Smart Grids smart meters enable two-way communication between the meter and the central system; unlike home energy monitors, smart meters can gather data for remote reporting. With the inception of electricity deregulation and market-driven pricing, utilities have been looking for a means to match consumption with generation. Smart meters provide a way of measuring site-specific information, allowing utility companies to introduce different prices for consumption based on the time of day and the season.
Sub-meters identify best practices to reduce energy and water consumption in a building allowing owners, property managers, condominium or homeowners associations to bill tenants for measured utility usage via individual water, gas and electric meters. Water Sub-meters promote conservation and help offset maintenance costs.
Distributed Generation occurs on a property site when energy is sold to the building occupants; here, commercial PPAs enable businesses and governments to purchase electricity directly from the generator rather than from the utility. Power Purchase Agreements PPA is a legal contract between an electricity generator and a power purchaser. 


Financing Energy Efficiency Projects face several financial impediments, including information. Financial institutions often lack a full understanding of energy efficiency technologies which are almost always investments with long repayment terms. Small towns and rural communities require specific and unique knowledge, expertise and funding sources.
